Outdated home trends general contractors are remodeling

Trends contractors and designers are updating in homes
Any home can start to look a little outdated after a few years. And while some design trends come back around ( shiplap is a wonderful example), others are best left in the past. If your home is starting to feel a little dated, you may be wondering how to give it a fresh new look.

One easy way to update your space is by remodeling. This can be a big project, like gutting your kitchen or adding an addition to your home. Or, it can be something smaller, like painting your walls or updating your light fixtures.

If you’re not ready for a full-scale remodel, there are still plenty of ways to update your home.

Here are a few outdated trends that you can replace with something new:

1. Outdated Trend: Popcorn Ceilings

If your home was built in the 1970s or earlier, chances are it has a popcorn ceiling. These were once popular because they were easy to install and helped mask imperfections in the ceilings. But nowadays, they’re considered outdated and can make your home look dated.

If you have a popcorn ceiling, you can remove it yourself or hire a professional to do it for you. Once the popcorn is gone, you’ll be left with a smooth ceiling that you can paint or add texture to.

2. Outdated Trend: Brass fixtures

Brass fixtures, like doorknobs, cabinet hardware, and light fixtures, were once very popular. But now, they’re starting to look a little outdated. If you have brass fixtures in your home, you can easily update them with new hardware. Just make sure to choose something that goes with the style of your home.

3. Outdated Trend: Wall-to-wall carpeting

Wall-to-wall carpeting was once very popular, but it’s now outdated and can make your home look dated. If you have wall-to-wall carpeting, you can replace it with hardwood floors, tile, or laminate. Or, you can just remove the carpet and leave the bare floors.

4. Outdated Trend: Dark, outdated paint colors

If your home is painted in dark, outdated colors, it can make the whole space feel dated. If you’re ready for a change, repaint your walls in lighter, more modern colors. You’ll be surprised at how much of a difference it makes.

It’s amazing how much of a difference a fresh coat of light paint can make. Dark paint colors can leave you feeling closed in and make the space feel tighter than desired.  Consider beige and light tones if you want a refresh.

5. Outdated Trend: Heavy, outdated furniture

Heavy, outdated furniture can make your whole home feel dated. If you have outdated furniture, you can replace it with newer, more modern pieces. Or, you can simply refinish the pieces you have to give them a new look.

There are plenty of ways to update your home without remodeling. Just by replacing a few outdated trends, you can make your space feel fresh and new.
